Family garden

A busy working couple with a small child had recently moved and had done extensive renovations to their new home. They had thoroughly modernized their house and had opened up the main living area looking onto the garden and were then left not quite knowing what to do with a very dated and not very child friendly garden. The only solution was to keep the lovely old cherry tree, ditch the huge leylandii, and all the old-fashioned rockery and shed.

The contemporary style of the house was carried through into the scheme by making clean square geometric shapes and reworking all the existing planting. Chic pale grey sandstone was used to create a new terrace for dining and this was linked back to the house by stepping stone paths through the newly turfed and extended lawn.

A soft planting scheme was chosen to include the client’s favourite plant colours of violets, purples, silvers and fresh whites. A new glossy laurel hedge was required for privacy so this was laid to an L shape to wrap around the boundary and this now provides a classic backdrop to the planting scheme.
